Intelligent Traffic Guidance Lighting at Hong Kong International Airport

Intelligent Traffic Guidance Lighting at Hong Kong International Airport
At one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs, operational efficiency is critical. In 2024, Hong Kong International Airport identified a growing challenge: peak-hour congestion at terminal drop-off lanes. During rush periods, the heavy influx of taxis and private vehicles created dense traffic conditions that conventional signage could no longer manage effectively.
To improve traffic flow and reduce congestion, the Airport Authority Hong Kong implemented an intelligent lighting system using 737 units of LUCITAG’s customized PIXEL Series TUBE 100 luminaires, designed to provide clear, real-time visual guidance to drivers—even under intense subtropical daylight.
A Complex Engineering Challenge
Two key technical challenges defined the project. First, the lighting system had to deliver exceptional visibility from over 100 meters, ensuring drivers could clearly identify available drop-off lanes even in direct sunlight.
Second, the installation area offered extremely limited structural clearance beneath the airport terminal canopy. Standard linear fixtures could not be used, requiring a bespoke lighting solution designed to integrate seamlessly into the existing architectural structure without compromising optical performance.
A Custom Lighting Innovation
In response, LUCITAG engineered a specialized version of its PIXEL Series TUBE 100, creating a custom-shaped linear lighting system uniquely adapted to the geometry of the terminal canopy.
Across the installation, 737 luminaires work with specially designed dynamic signal decoders and occupancy sensors integrated beneath the canopy. The system instantly switches between high-visibility red and green signals, allowing drivers to identify vacant drop-off berths long before entering congested zones. The result is smoother vehicle movement and reduced hesitation during peak traffic periods.
As critical infrastructure, the system was engineered for long-term resilience. With an IP66-rated design, the luminaires are built to withstand Hong Kong’s extreme weather conditions, including heavy rain, high humidity, and typhoon exposure.
Since installation, the system has remained fully operational despite severe weather events, ensuring uninterrupted guidance for airport traffic 24 hours a day.
Improving Operational Efficiency
Since commissioning, the intelligent lighting system has significantly improved the efficiency of drop-off traffic flow by reducing search time for available lanes and minimizing congestion during peak hours.
This project highlights LUCITAG’s expertise in smart infrastructure lighting, where advanced engineering and custom design transform lighting systems into precision tools that improve the functionality of complex environments.
