Century Link Mall
Shanghai, China, 2023
Application: Commercial
Product: WASH, STRIP
Model: ARCHI SPOT 150, FLEX STRIP
The Century Link Mall stands as a prominent commercial landmark in Shanghai, centered around an expansive multi-story retail atrium. At the heart of this space, a massive, tiered structural ceiling sculpture is suspended directly beneath the main skylight, serving as the definitive focal point of the complex.
To activate this intricate installation, LUCITAG implemented a specialized architectural lighting scheme designed to articulate the sculpture’s scale while preserving complete visual comfort. The intent was to use concealed, structured illumination to transform the suspended centerpiece into a softly radiant floating volume at night, establishing a calibrated nocturnal identity for the atrium without introducing glare into the surrounding retail galleries.
Organic Contour Definition
To reinforce the continuous, wave-like rhythm of the tiered acoustic baffles, the project utilizes LUCITAG Monochromatic Pure White FLEX STRIPS. A total of 2,230 meters of these custom linear systems were seamlessly integrated within the structure's concealed coves and curved channels. The high-density, dot-free output forms a continuous luminous edge across the vertical faces of every architectural tier. Rather than reading as applied light, it defines the layered geometry from within, producing a weightless, floating perception of the suspended mass and enhancing the sense of vertical depth across all viewing levels of the concourse.
Dynamic Skylight Articulation
Framed within the inner core of this suspended sculpture, the geometric skylight matrix is composed of an intricate network of intersecting louvers. To activate this structural element after dark, 36 units of the high-power LUCITAG Wash ARCHI SPOT 150 (RGBW) were perimeter-mounted along the inner bulkhead ring. Through precise beam control and advanced RGBW color mixing, the luminaires articulate the louver grid with controlled gradients and subtle tonal shifts. The optical system ensures uniform coverage across the skylight facets while strictly containing spill light within the architectural boundary, allowing the structure to transition seamlessly from daylight-driven transparency to programmable nocturnal atmospheres.
