Technical Excellence at Scale: LUCITAG’s Bespoke Guidance System for Hong Kong International Airport
The Site: A High-Pressure Transportation Hub
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) stands as one of the world’s most demanding aviation environments. In 2024, the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) identified a critical operational bottleneck: peak-hour congestion at terminal drop-off lanes. The influx of private vehicles and taxis during morning surges created high-density traffic that traditional signage could not resolve.
To restore fluid movement, AAHK required an intelligent, real-time visual signaling solution capable of performing under the most rigorous outdoor conditions. The project ultimately deployed 737 units of LUCITAG’s customized signaling luminaires across the terminal canopy, forming a continuous guidance system designed to manage vehicle flow at scale.
The Challenge: Visibility and Structural Integration
The engineering brief presented two primary hurdles. First, the luminaires had to deliver exceptional luminous intensity to remain visible to drivers from over 100 meters away, even under the piercing glare of direct subtropical sunlight. Second, the physical installation site offered extremely limited clearance.
A standard off-the-shelf linear fixture would not suffice. The solution required a bespoke form factor that could seamlessly integrate into the airport’s existing canopy architecture without compromising optical performance.

The Innovation: A World-First Bespoke Solution
LUCITAG responded by developing a specialized iteration of our PIXEL Series TUBE 100. Moving beyond simple illumination, we engineered a custom-shaped linear system—the only one of its design globally— tailored specifically to the structural geometry of the HKIA terminal.Across the installation, 737 luminaires work in conjunction with specially designed dynamic signal decoders and occupancy sensors integrated under the canopy. The system instantly switches between high-visibility red and green signals, allowing drivers to identify vacant drop-off berths long before entering congested zones. The result is smoother vehicle movement and reduced hesitation during peak traffic periods.

Engineered for Resilience: The Typhoon Test
In the realm of critical infrastructure, reliability is essential. Built to IP66 standards, the LUCITAG system was engineered to withstand Hong Kong’s volatile climate.
Following installation, the system has endured direct typhoon hits and extreme weather events, remaining 100% intact and operational. This resilience ensures that the Airport Authority’s investment continues to facilitate smooth traffic flow 24/7, regardless of environmental stressors.

The Result: Measurable Operational Efficiency
Since the commissioning of the LUCITAG intelligent guidance system, the drop-off lanes have seen a quantifiable improvement in vehicular throughput. By providing clear, long-range visual cues, the airport has significantly reduced search-time congestion during peak periods. This project underscores LUCITAG’s position in smart infrastructure lighting. We do not simply provide illumination—we deliver precision-engineered tools that solve complex logistical challenges for the world’s most critical transportation gateways.
