Architectural Transparency & Art Installation Integration
The lighting design for the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre explores the intersection between contemporary public art and architectural transparency. Located within the building’s glass-enclosed upper gallery, the installation activates a series of large, translucent inflatable sculptures that transform the space into a shifting visual field after dark. Rather than applying conventional ambient lighting, the glass volume is treated as a luminous architectural lantern, extending the presence of the installation into the surrounding urban context. The result is a dialogue between the illuminated upper gallery and the more solid, material expression of the building’s lower masonry base.

Volumetric Illumination & Dynamic Control
To achieve uniform volumetric saturation, a concealed linear lighting system is integrated along the internal base of the glass envelope. LUCITAG Graze Wash Mega Slim G3 luminaires are positioned to deliver an upward-controlled wash into the suspended translucent forms. Operating on an RGBW platform with DMX control, the system allows precise modulation of color and intensity. Light penetrates the fabric volumes from within, generating deep chromatic fields and subtle gradients that shift across the installation without exposing the lighting equipment or creating direct glare through the glazing. This approach transforms the installation into a responsive spatial composition—where light, material, and architectural enclosure operate as a single calibrated system, reinforcing the cultural and visual identity of the space at night.
