Completed in 1910, Anderson Bridge is among Singapore's most historically significant river crossings — a riveted steel truss bridge connecting Empress Place to Collyer Quay at the civic heart of the city. Gazetted as a National Monument, it has carried the city's daily movement across the Singapore River for over a century.
The 2025 restoration set out to give the bridge a considered nocturnal identity — enhancing visibility and safety for pedestrians and river traffic after dark, while preserving its architectural integrity in full.

Structures of this age were never conceived with illumination in mind. The challenge was one of restraint as much as engineering — introducing light without disturbing over a century of heritage fabric. Developed in partnership with Koizumi Singapore, the lighting system was engineered specifically for the tropical, maritime environment, sitting discreetly against the bridge's original steelwork with no structural alteration to the existing framework.
The installation uses HP Linear DC RGBW fixtures from the GRAZE Collection, IP66-rated for continuous outdoor exposure in a coastal environment. DMX-integrated control allows the system to transition between a calibrated 4000K white for everyday use and dynamic colour scenes for civic occasions and special events, giving the bridge a flexible identity after dark.
The result is a structure that reads with quiet clarity at night — its latticework and riveted steel traced in light, visible from both the footpath and the water. Anderson Bridge reflects a principle central to heritage lighting design: that precision engineering and historical character are not in tension, but in dialogue — allowing a century-old structure to be illuminated on its own terms, rather than reinvented.
